Somesh Mathur fondly called Panditji has devoted his life to the discovery of new vistas in the field of music. An explorer by nature, he has experimented with different genres, creating a few moments of magic in his quest to enlarge the boundaries of conventional music.

Fluent in English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati & to some extent in Punjabi, He conceived, Arranged & Produced the path-breaking Album, called, ASHA – A Brand New Album SAREGAMA-HMV - 2005. The album is a compilation of CLASSIC GHAZALS rendered in the genre of lounge music, acknowledged to be a landmark by none other than the living legend, ASHA BHOSLE. The album has been a runaway hit, commanding the No.1 spot for over nine weeks. The album also won the MTV Video Music Award in the BEST FEMALE POP Category, 2005. It is for the first time that a Ghazal album has been on Top of the Charts. It is also hugely popular in Pakistan; Middle-East & Africa and has been licensed world-wide to be sold in main-stream music stores like Tower Records, Virgin Stores Times Square, New York City, where the album was No. 1 on the WORLD MUSIC CHARTS, EMI Stores, etc. Both the Videos from the album were in the Top 20 Countdown in three Main Stream Channels in the U.S. & CANADA and the album was even filed for a Grammy Nomination!!!

A scholar at heart, Somesh Mathur combines the discipline of a classical singer with the thorough professionalism of an MBA graduate. His creativity and panache stem from the environment in which this child prodigy has been brought up. His illustrious father, Pandit Sarvesh Chandra Mathur is an exponent of the Agra Gharana. His talented mother, Smt. Sudha Mathur is a Violin maestro, being one of the foremost disciples of one of the greatest doyens of Indian Classical Music - PANDIT V.G. JOG. Their encouragement saw a 4-year-old Somesh give a virtuoso performance of a Chota Khyaal in Raga Durga.

To further hone his talent, Somesh Mathur graduated as a Sangeet Visharad [equivalent to a graduation degree in Hindustani Classical Music - Vocal] from the famous Gandharva Mahavidhyalaya along with an MBA to gain the academic rigour that is instilled in many of his compositions.

His first ever professional concert at the famous Sangeet Research Academy [Calcutta] charmed an elite and discerning audience including stalwarts of Indian Classical Music like; the late Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan; the late Pandit V.G.Jog; the late Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan; the late Pandit Nivritbua Sarnaik; the late Pandit Gyan Prakash Ghosh; the late Ustad Vilayat Khan; Ustad Rashid Khan; amongst a host of several other accomplished artistes & gurus.

From then on, Somesh Mathur has never looked back and has won a number of accolades acknowledging his thirst to uncover new streams of music. Somesh experiments with a variety of genres ranging from Indian Classical to Classic Rock; and everything in between, like, Jazz; Soul; Blues; Hip-Hop; Western Classical; Thumri; Qawaali; Bhajan; Keertan; Sufi and Ghazals. “My favourite international artistes/ bands are The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen...” says the soft-spoken star. Evincing confidence and a belief that nothing is impossible, Somesh reveals, that his secret ambition and desire is to be a vocalist, and a songwriter / producer for PINK FLOYD! With his proficiency on Tabla, Harmonium, Keyboards, Guitar, and Drums, Somesh Mathur contributes a lot more to the world of music, than just his voice, as is evident on all his albums.

His first ever album, EK NAYI BAAT CBS - SONY / BMG - 1988 was a progressive and trend setting Ghazal album. LIVE IN EUROPE SOM INC. /PANDIT RECORDS followed in 1991-92. As a result of his first two albums, and a natural stage and screen presence, the artist has given over five hundred shows, world-wide & featured in seven music videos till date; besides having broadcasted on the esteemed ALL INDIA RADIO & DOORDARSHAN, for several years and been widely written about and featured in the Press & on Television respectively, world-wide.

The singer - composer started work on his ground breaking album, ACHCHA HAI MAGNASOUND in 1994, which was launched with much fan-fare in 1996. Apart from album recordings, Somesh has also recorded, performed and produced the title music for several T.V. Commercials –Serials - Series. To name a few:

A prominent milestone in Somesh’s career was when he recorded for and performed at the Grand Finale of the Channel [V] Awards 1997, the historic album/song, REASON TO SMILE Wajah Muskurane Ki; MAGNASOUND; 1997, as a part of the celebrations for India’s 50th year of Independence. The album and the music video were much celebrated and critically acclaimed, besides being a huge commercial success. Love is a theme that runs through all of Somesh’s albums, as can be heard and felt on his runaway hit album, NAZAR MILAA KE MAGNASOUND-1998 .

His latest solo work, GHALIB – THE SUFI, TIMES MUSIC, presents an exciting picture of Somesh’s versatile talent. Inspired by the timeless genius of Ghalib, the versatile singer has rendered some of the poet’s most celebrated ghazals, in a style that is modern and maverick, yet deeply rooted in classicism and traditional aesthetics, creating a mood of Musical Mysticism.

The dynamic composer possesses a bank of over 120 tunes composed over several years encompassing various genres of music. Besides the above, the young maestro has also produced an album, as a tribute to the legend, SURAIYA.

As Music & Bollywood go hand in hand; the Singer – Composer - Producer recently composed music for the exciting Bollywood film The first to be officially released in Pakistan, BULLET – EK DHAMAKA, and is presently, composing music for four Bollywood films…
